Dyeing Yarn With Royal Poinciana Pods - Natural Yarn Dyeing

Submitted by Regev on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 15:00 CET

Now that I got the hang of the basics of natural dyeing, I'm allowing myself to conduct experiments with the local plants and trees. I have never seen anyone use the Royal Poinciana pods for anything other than decorations or perhaps as a rattle, but since these trees are all over the place at my Kibbutz, I just decided to try! The result is surprising and beautiful. I love it!

After watching a few videos on dyeing yarn using Red Cabbage and seeing how the result can be different each time, I was curious to see what mine would turn out like. The results are, once more, not what you might have expected...

For this attempt at natural yarn dyeing, I decided to use red beets. I have watched several videos about this method, and each time the final color was different, so I was very curious to see what happens.

Dyeing Yarn With Red Beans - Natural Yarn Dyeing

For my third attempt at natural yarn dyeing, I decided to use red beans. This is not something I have seen done before, but since I know red beans always leave a deep brown color in the water after soaking, I thought I would give it a try. Once again, the final result is a bit deeper in color than my camera would show. It is a soft almond color.

Dyeing Yarn With Avocado - Natural Yarn Dyeing

For my second attempt at natural yarn dyeing, I decided to go with Avocado. It is Avocado season here right now and all my neighbors helped with collecting the pits and skins. The final color is a very light dusty rose color. It looks very subtle on the video, but it isn't actually. That is my camera playing light-tricks... 🤦‍♀️

Dyeing Yarn With Pomegranate - Natural Yarn Dyeing

I'm venturing into dyeing yarn using natural ingredients and I wanted to share it with you all! Pomegranates grow wild here at the kibbutz, so I decided to use them as my first natural dyeing component!
I used this video by @Myra Made Color as a guide: https://youtu.be/2yLJ3iQ3Rh0
